Amethysts are a variety of quartz minerals, recognizable by their purple color. Like all minerals belonging to the quartz family, it has the same basic chemical formula: SiO2.

Its remarkable color however, is caused by 'contamination' of titanium(Ti) and iron(Fe) atoms. Amethyst is very common to be found in geodes. In Brazil and Uruguay Amethyst geodes are mined on a large scale for mineral trade.
