The area near Filipstad is known for its variety of minerals. In the past mining took place here in metamorphic iron-manganese and pegmatite rocks. The best way to find minarals is to dig into the old dumps hoping to get to fresh material and to split the stones.

About 300 kinds of minerals known from this area. About 30 species are known only from here. The species most commonly found are Richterite, Schefferite, Svabite and Tilasite.
